HOW TO DECORATE WALLS AT WEDDINGS - 5 stunning ideas

Wedding venue decorations - break it down

When I start thinking about Wedding Venue Decorations I like to break down the venue into ‘apply-able’ space. That is, space or areas where an additional element of design or decoration can be added. Make a long list of all the areas of possibilities. Is the ceiling an option? Which walls are blank? Do they have existing fixtures, can you add your own? A lot of these answers will be dependent on the venue you’ve chosen for your day.

I’ve included ideas for a range of set ups, from traditional wedding venues that might not want you to attach anything to the wall, to total dry hire venues where you might have a relationship with the owner that means you can do more of an ‘installlation’ and have more set-up time to do so.

  1. Re-usable wedding screens

This is one for those that can’t attach wedding decorations to their venue walls. Screens are a great freestanding option to place in front of walls - especially if you’re working with a blank white wall and want to add some interest. Many hire companies offer screens you can use once and return afterwards so you don’t need to rush to B&Q to try and create yourselves (think about what you’ll do with them afterwards!)

2. Streamer wall - fabric, paper or fringing

A lot of companies now hire re-usable streamers for your wedding venue decoration, or you could have a go at making one with a recyclable material like crepe paper. It’s important to consider how you install these as they can become quite heavy once finished. I’d attach to a metal chain then attach that chain at either side of the wall if possible!

3. Paper Sunbursts - Eco friendly wedding decor

This is a backdrop I created myself entirely from coloured A3 card! It’s now something that I share how to make for FREE with my private clients and couples who want to create it themselves at their wedding.

I’ve installed it here with a mixture of non-damaging white tack plus hanging the bigger Sunbursts with fishing wire from nails in a baton above. You could create a similar look using a rail to hang from if you can’t attach a baton or any nails to the wall.

4. Honeycomb shape wall wedding party decorations

This is a cool idea, once again using paper. These honeycomb shapes are easily available online - instead of unfolding to their full 3D shape, if you fold out halfway you can stick the flat side to a wall. This one is most definitely for a venue that wouldn’t mind you doing this, or even a space or venue you own yourself and don’t mind touching up with paint afterwards just in case! Arm yourself with non-damaging double sided sticky tape to try and prevent this happening. These are super versatile wedding day decorations and can be bought in any colour combo.

5. Paper wedding flowers

Love this design by company Paper Wedding Flowers. This must have been a painstaking installation taking lots of time but you could recreate something on a smaller scale, sticking pieces directly to the wall. Use white tack or some brilliant non-damaging double sided tape.

Also they wouldn’t have to flowers. What about stars, suns, smiley faces, hearts, monstera leaves…

If you’re looking for a quicker way to install the decorations at your wedding venue you could attach them to a sheet of fabric, then rig that sheet of fabric up in one go 😎
